According to the biography "Paul Newman: A Life" by Shawn Levy, Newman and director Victor Saville got into an argument over a scene (not appearing in resulting film) in which Basil would receive a divine revelation inspiring him to craft the chalice. The script contained a lengthy speech about his feelings in response. Newman insisted that it would be better if Basil pondered this vision in silence. Studio head Jack Warner ordered Newman to shut up, and Newman, fearing for his job, went along with the scene as written, which he later regretted.
