Having optioned the screenplay for The Elephant Man (1980) and gotten Mel Brooks interested in having his production company handle it, Jonathan Sanger was referred to Lynch by executive producer Stuart Cornfeld. Sanger nervously screened this film for Brooks, who said afterward: "It's an adolescent's nightmare of responsibility. I like it!"
