Director Peter Farrelly grew up listening to the music of Orpheus, whose 1968 hit song "Can't Find the Time" (a.k.a. "Can't Find the Time to Tell You") is featured on the soundtrack. Orpheus was a Massachusetts-based pop group fronted by lead singer / guitarist Bruce Arnold, which recorded four classic albums for MGM and Bell Records in the late 1960s and early 1970s. For his movie Io, me & Irene (2000), Farrelly had Hootie & the Blowfish cover "Can't Find the Time" and included their cover version on the accompanying soundtrack CD released on Elektra Records. In the Blu-ray commentary for Me, Myself & Irene (2000), Farrelly praised Orpheus as a "great band" and bragged that he had dated a woman who was once engaged to a band member. He has also stated that the character Amy Smart in his novel and movie L'occasione per cambiare (1999) was a composite of this former girlfriend.
