After Dobby is buried, Harry remains at the burial site alone and places a small stone on the grave. There is an ancient Jewish custom of placing pebbles or small stones on a gravesite as a sign of remembrance and respect (Harry Potter is not a Jewish character, but the actor who plays him, Daniel Radcliffe, considers himself Jewish). After this movie was made, the filming location for this scene (Freshwater West Beach, Pembrokeshire, Wales) became a pilgrimage site for Harry Potter fans, with visitors leaving hundreds of small stones in tribute to Dobby. However, in late 2019 the National Trust decided that the shrine and memorial stones would be removed because the influx of visitors was having an negative environmental impact on the beach. Especially damaging to the ocean ecosystem were the thousands of socks being left on the beach; socks can easily kill ocean animals like turtles and seals that mistakenly consume them.
