It's not mentioned specifically, but the island that rises out of the Pacific Ocean bears some striking similarities with the floating island found in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (1994). Angel Island there, though, is home to Knuckles. That's not the case here, even if it is Angel Island in all but name.
