At Franklin's new job, his CIA coworker rather offhandedly points out how the super locusts are threatening global life on a biblical scale. To this, he points out it's only a matter of time before the "other plagues" follow suit, "darkness, rain of fire" the works. Towards the climax, both "plagues" come to pass, from the blackout (darkness) to the enflamed super locusts falling from the sky (rain of fire).
