In 1783, Marie Antoinette financed the construction of the "Hameau de la Reine" (The Queen's Hamlet) as a rustic retreat for herself and her closest friends. It was built in the style of a small village with cottage-style buildings. It included a functioning farm to provide milk and eggs for the Queen.
