In order to keep the film at a PG-13 rating, the MPAA set strict rules that director Julie Taymor had to follow. Taymor said the stars in their nude scenes had to carefully position their arms and limbs to avoid showing too much flesh. In the portrait painting scene, Taymor was only allowed two long-distance nipple shots of Lucy. They ended up having three and the MPAA made them cut out one. Taymor feels a rating system that exalts ultra-violence and squashes even the most benign nudie imagery is "disgusting and heinous," saying, "If it were really the 1960s, all of the kids would be naked and my actors wouldn't have to mime smoking marijuana. It's pathetic that we have a culture of values that's become so skewed."
