According to an interview with co-screenwriter, Janet Scott Batchler, the scene of Bruce Wayne falling through the cavern and encountering a bat which inspires him to become Batman, followed later by the infamous deleted scene of an adult Bruce embracing the figurative bat was not in the original script and its inclusion was entirely Joel Schumacher's idea.
