The man drinking from the flask of bourbon is a real person named Charles Joughin who was the chief baker on the Titanic and the last survivor to leave the ship. He paddled for over 2 hours in the frigid waters until a boat picked him up and said he didn't really feel the cold due to the large amounts of alcohol he had consumed.
