The Kamehameha wave, Goku's signature move, was named in reference to Kamehameha the Third, the first king of Hawaii and a legendary warrior who united the disparate islands into a single kingdom. This is why Roshi, in the anime at least, lived in a lonesome tropical island in the middle of the ocean.
