Layla El-Faouly (portrayed by May Calamawy) is the first main Arab/Middle Eastern female character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The character wasn't originally Egyptian in the script. It was the screenwriters' decision to make her Egyptian. Layla El-Faouly does not exist in the Moon Knight comics. The name Layla means "night" in Arabic and Hebrew (though in Hebrew it is pronounced Lila).
