Serena shares several similarities with May: Both began their journeys as trainers for unorthodox reasons: May simply to travel, and Serena to reunite with Ash; Neither knew what their goal was at first, but eventually focused on one related to beauty and style; Both were expected to pursue the same career as one of their parents: May was expected to become a Gym Leader like her father, and Serena was expected to become a Rhyhorn racer like her mother; Both chose the Fire-type starter Pokémon native to their home region (May with Torchic and Serena with Fennekin) and both of them later evolved during the series. Both obtain an Eevee, which later evolves into an Eeveelution (Sylveon and Glaceon, respectively); Neither had any disobedient Pokémon, unlike Misty, Dawn, and Iris. Neither own a walking Pokémon, both had one last battle against Ash before departing and both, along with Dawn, later traveled to a region Ash previously traveled through to participate in Pokemon Contests after retiring from the main cast: May went to the Johto region after traveling around with Ash (where Ash traveled before meeting her) while Serena and Dawn both traveled to the Hoenn region (where May is from and where Pokemon Contests first originated).
