Matt Groening named Leela after Louise Jameson's character on Doctor Who (1963). "Lila" (pronounced "leela") means "purple" in Finnish, Spanish, Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, German, Dutch, and Hungarian... the color of Leela's hair.
