Although the film is technically an adaptation of the novel Red Harvest by Dashiell Hammett, the story is only credited to Ryûzô Kikushima and Akira Kurosawa, as their La sfida del samurai (1961) was also an uncredited adaptation on Hammett's novel. One exception is the scene where the protagonist is savagely beaten near-death, which was inspired by Hammett's novel The Glass Key. Both Last Man Standing and the earlier remake Per un pugno di dollari (1964) have included this latter scene.
