Writer/director Rian Johnson commented about the character of General Hux: "I found the character of Hux... I don't know, I immediately found him very funny. I saw a lot of humor potential in him, and I knew that Kylo was going to be front and center as kind of the heavy in this movie. We didn't need another heavy between Kylo and Snoke. And so the notion of Hux kind of being this foil that could add a slightly different flavor to everything, I thought could be more useful."
