The original pilot episode, known as Cass Malloy (1982), was produced by Lorimar Television Production and aired on CBS in 1982. Annie Potts was originally cast in the title role, but left before production began. Potts was replaced by Caroline McWilliams. Supporting cast members included Corey Feldman, Dick Butkus, Glynn Turman, Lou Richards, and George Wyner. The pilot was shot at KTLA Studios (now known as Sunset Bronson Studios). CBS ultimately passed on Cass Malloy. When the project was picked up for syndication in 1984, it was retitled She's the Sheriff and Suzanne Somers was cast in the lead role. Lou Richards and George Wyner were the only two actors from the original pilot that were cast in the series.
