The first episode misses a large part of Uhtred's backstory from the books. After his adoption by Ragnar, Uhtred is taken a-viking (raiding) with what is historically known as the Great Heathen Army led by Ubba and his brother Ivar the Boneless in the invasion and conquest of East Anglia and Mercia and an unsuccessful invasion of Wessex where Uhtred fights in his first battle, in a Danish shieldwall, against the West Saxon army led by Alfred's brother the King. This invasion is transposed in the series to episode 2, after the death of Ragnar. Because of this shifting of events we lose Uhtred's training and development into the ruthless warrior we later see, it is just implied rather than shown.
