Spock makes mention of Khan displaying a penchant for two-dimensional thinking in his battle tactics against the Enterprise, and Admiral Kirk subsequently exploits this weakness to defeat his intelligent but less-experienced opponent. Nevertheless, this was the last time any battle in Star Trek was not relatively two-dimensional, with the ships all in roughly the same plane and oriented the same way, until the 1994 broadcast of "All Good Things..." (the final episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987)) in which the future Enterprise-D is shown attacking several Klingon vessels from directly below.
