The characters who neither appeared in nor were mentioned The Family skits on The Carol Burnett Show (1967) or the television special, Eunice (1982) were Naomi Oates Harper, Fran Crowley, Vinton 'Buzz' Harper, Jr., Sonja Harper, Effie Harper, and Iola Boylen. Vinton Harper morphed from the more serious and successful writer, Phillip Harper; Bubba Higgins was previously an off-screen character who had a younger brother named Billy, also off-screen; and there was a Naomi mentioned in Eunice as a friend of the title character, though it is unclear if it is the same one presented in this series. Though Iola was created in the third season, her family was mentioned during the first two seasons, with a very brief appearance of presumably Iola's mother in the second season episode, Mama Learns to Drive (1984).
