Ja'net Dubois, who was part of Norman Lear's cast for Good Times, playing Wilona Woods on that show, told Lear one day during rehearsals that she was multitalented and could help out his burgeoning Tandem Productions in a variety of different ways. Lear decided to humor her, and told her he did need help writing the theme song for an upcoming spinoff of All in the Family, called the Jeffersons. All Lear told her was the theme of the show; was about this family of cleaners, getting their start in life. Dubois thought about the subject all week, and was unable to find a hook for the song; until her mother just told her to base the song on her own real life; and Dubois' own real life goal since she was a little girl was to "move on up to a deluxe apartment on the east side". The lyrics of the song that she wound up writing, "Movin on Up", were just an articulation of her own real life goal to relocate her and her mother to a richer neighborhood in New York, once she made it in showbiz. Lear later listened to the song; and he liked it; but he asked Dubois how she knew all about the Jeffersons' back story when he didn't tell her that much information about the pilot; and she told him it was "personal"; it was just her life put to song. Lear obviously used the song, and the rest is history: Not only did it become The Jeffersons theme song; but Dubois would perform it for ten seasons on the show. Dubois admitted in interviews she became rich on that theme song alone.
