Part of the satire in this film is in regard to the postwar relationship between the U.S. and the U.K., in which Britain emerged with a dissolving empire and an economy in ruins, and the U.S. emerged as the world's greatest economic and military power. The uneasy relationship between the dominating Ripper and the cowed Mandrake makes grim fun of how the U.K. had found itself struggling to retain its dignity while being compelled to submit to American determination; something that for many Britons remains a continuing issue to this day.
