Feeling that there was a lull in the '90s of teen sex comedies, Adam Herz wrote "American Pie" as sort of a then-modern take of the classic teen movies from the '80s, with "Porky's" and "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" being the entire impetus for this. However, one main difference Herz made sure to have was its female characters, to actually flesh them out rather than just treat them as flesh. In fact, the girls in the film see right through the guys' libidos and hold out long enough to change their agendas from lust to love. He wrote it so that this time women in the movie have control.
