Nehemiah Persoff played the bit part of the cab driver who takes Charley (Rod Steiger) on his final ride. Just before the camera moved in for his key close-up, Elia Kazan whispered in his ear, "Think that the guy behind you killed your mother". After seeing the film Persoff was surprised at how effective this bit of direction was.
