Lee Van Cleef had had a long and steady career playing 2nd and 3rd bad guys in film and television, and had considered himself pretty much retired until Leone came calling. Leone's making Lee the costar, and his use of extreme close-ups, emphasizing the chiseled, hawk-like nature of Lee's facial features, propelled him into not only stardom as a villain, but as the hero of various neo-westerns in the late 60s and early 70s.
