Bowman ejects the glass blocks for HAL's higher logic towards the end of the movie. There is a medium of memory storage using glass called 5D optical data storage. Using a femtosecond laser writing process called mode-locking, data is stored on nanostructured glass that contains the nanostructures of embedded gold and silver.
