At initial previews, audiences appeared slightly confused by the plot so 20th Century Fox asked Sir Ridley Scott to chop 45 minutes out of the film. He complied reluctantly and then wasn't overly surprised when the film did not do well in America. His Director's Cut, released at the tail end of 2005, received overwhelmingly better praise for being a much more cohesive film.
