Louise Jameson initially wore brown contact lenses, because it was thought that they would fit her character better. However, Jameson found the contact lenses very uncomfortable and seriously considered to leave the show. In order to allow her to keep her natural blue eyes, the ending of the series 15 story "The Horror of Fang Rock" explains that Leela gets blinded by an explosion, but she regains her eyesight a moment later, causing them to change from brown to blue.
