Josh Trank was essentially deprived of all directorial authority after Fox objected to his original cut. The studio hired Stephen E. Rivkin to re-edit the film, and ordered extensive rewrites and reshoots to fit his version. Trank said Rivkin became the "de facto director." Furthermore, reshoots were heavily scrutinized by producers Simon Kinberg and Hutch Parker.
