At one point, the soldiers are lying down and resting in a field, while Willard ( Harry Dean Stanton ) is playing the harmonica and singing a song about a dog named Blue. Stanton (and Richard Davalos, who's also present in the same scene) starred in Nick mano fredda (1967), which featured a dog named Blue.
