Only after the wrap did Robert Wise check on the visual effects, of which he hadn't even seen a demo shot (which concerned him). This soon became apparent that the first special effects house couldn't get the job done. Douglas Trumbull and his former assistant John Dykstra had been the original choices, and as their previous commitments had since been completed, they were brought on board with only months to go. They had to work around the clock to get the job done. By now, this film was so overbudget that Paramount Studios executives were keeping a running tab each day of how much this was such.
