Deja Thoris, the Belgian Witch of Marwen, and Elsa the French milkmaid are the only puppets in Marwen without a human equivalent in the real world. Deja Thoris (Diane Kruger) is stated to be the reason that Hogie (Steve Carell) cannot get close to women, and she is later revealed to be the one who keeps resurrecting the Nazis. Deja is effectively keeping Mark's fear of his assailants alive, and may therefore be seen as a manifestation of his ongoing trauma, instead of an impersonation of an actual person. Only after he has gotten rid of her can he cope with the pain of his PTSD in real life.
