Many of the characters' names have significant and in some cases multiple meanings. For example, Pedro, Abuela Alma's late husband, means "stone"; Antonio can mean both "priceless" and "flourishing"; Felix and Augustin both derive from Latin words for good fortune. Bruno translates most directly to "brown", but in Nordic languages can mean "shining", "protection", and "armour". Mirabel means "wondrous beauty", but can also be a bit of wordplay for "sees wonder" or "sees wonderfully" (mira+bel). Bruno's name, though a late change, acquires extra meaning when paired with his signature green clothing: it gives him a hidden color scheme of green and brown - like a tree.
