According to Gavin Lambert in his book 'On Cukor', the director drew heavily from the autobiography of pioneer actor Joseph Jefferson and an unproduced treatment of it written by D.W. Griffith in the 1940s. The scene where the Native Americans dress up in the costumes is taken directly from this.
