The film portrays Jean de Carrouges as a mostly fair (for his days) but emotionally cold and harsh husband, who expresses doubts and suspicions when Marguerite tells him about the rape. Very little is known of the day-to-day relationship between Jean and Marguerite in real life. While the former was, by all accounts, a proud, quarrelsome and jealous man, there is no indication that he was anything but supportive of his wife once she told him about the assault.
