In the film, the Spartans are aided by Archadians that retreat when the Persians are shown the goat path. In the comic they were aided by Thespians who attempt to stop the Persians at the goat path and are slaughtered to the last man. This was a reference to Herodotos' description of the battle of Thermopylae, where most Greeks fled when they discovered they were flanked, save for the Spartans who opted to stay and the Thespians who refused to leave the Spartans. Though it's usually stated that the Spartans were legally not allowed to retreat, many historians believe that the reason was more altruistic: unless stalled it's likely the Persians could have caught up with the 3000 Greek soldiers retreating. By covering the retreat the Spartans and the Thespians prevented Persian cavalry from passing through the open ground and reaching the other Greeks.
