A line that was deleted from the movie nonetheless ended up being featured in the the film's trailer. While boarding the ship in Southampton Cal says to Rose "I've pulled every string I could to get us booked on the grandest ship in history and you act as if your going to your execution." This line is said as Rose and Cal traveled up the gangplank to the liner. While the scene remained in the film the line was edited out. The most likely reason for the line's deletion was that Cal would have hardly had to pull any strings to book a passage on the Titanic. First and Second Class's on the liner were hardly even half full as the ship maiden trip coincided with the end of a coal strike in England which laid up many liners. Due to the uncertainties brought on by the strike, many people were cautious in their travel plans at the time and thus, merciful, the ship had only 2,208 people aboard as opposed to her full capacity of 3,547 people. Unfortunately, many people who find themselves aboard the liner had been transferred from other White Star Line ships that were being laid up due to the strike. It would be weeks after the Titanic disaster when coal supplies became plentiful again thus allowing most liners to resume their normal schedules.
