The Holy Hand Grenade used in the final battle is a callback to the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch from Monty Python e il Sacro Graal (1975), and also a weapon from the Worms games. Monty Python e il Sacro Graal (1975) plays an important role in the third gate in the source novel.
