This movie is based on a French film, La famiglia Bélier (2014). However, when that movie was released, it was controversial in the deaf community, as two of the main deaf characters were played by hearing actors; the exception being Luca Gelberg, who is deaf in real life. An example is Rebecca Atkinson's Guardian op/ed, "La Famille Bélier Is Yet Another Cinematic Insult to the Deaf Community". This was not a problem in this film as all the deaf members of the Rossi family are played by actors who are deaf in their real lives (Marlee Matlin, Troy Kotsur, and Daniel Durant).
