Director James Gunn considered this film as the most fun he has had making a film, which he attributed to prioritizing creativity over perfectionism, being in the best place mentally and emotionally, having a "stupendous" cast and crew, a supportive studio (Warner Bros. didn't interfere with his vision and had only given a few minor notes on it), and feeling that he was at the height of his directing abilities.
