As the Grand High Witch arrives at the hotel, the fabric of her outfit is a black-and-white houndstooth pattern. This movie takes place in Alabama. Although houndstooth is a common pattern that is thought to have originated in woven textiles from 1800s Scotland, in Alabama black-and-white houndstooth is very strongly associated with the football program at the University of Alabama. This is because Paul "Bear" Bryant, who was the team's coach from 1958 to 1983, often wore a black-and-white houndstooth fedora. In fact, the university has attempted to assert a trademark on the pattern (despite its long history and many other connotations) and in recent decades has pursued legal action against various businesses it feels have used houndstooth inappropriately and in conjunction with other symbols of the school or the team. Octavia Spencer, who plays Grandma, the enemy of the Grand High Witch, is an alumna of Auburn University, the archrival of the University of Alabama.
