Deeming Sherlock Holmes: The Dancing Men (1968) to be over-running, producer/director William Sterling outlined cuts to be made, passing these instructions to the editing team to remove the relevant sections. However, seemingly no-one reviewed the edition before transmission, resulting in unedited studio material being broadcast. A chastened BBC wrote a letter of apology to Peter Cushing; his predecessor Douglas Wilmer caught the screening and remained thankful he had elected not to return as Holmes. A corrected copy was screened in the show's repeat run in 1970.
