The in-fighting over the correct Presidential line of succession was inspired by the real-world controversy after President Ronald Reagan's assassination attempt. While Reagan was in surgery the Vice President and the Speaker of the House were temporarily out-of-pocket. Reagan's Secretary of State, Alexander Haig, told the press that he was temporarily in charge. This was because he was unaware of the change that inserted the President Pro Tempore of the Senate in the line of succession ahead of the Secretary of State. The gap was very brief as the Vice President immediately stepped in. The incident shone a negative spotlight on Haig, with accusations in the press of a power grab by a notably hawkish former General. Haig resigned shortly thereafter.
