Elementary uses fresh plots of crimes in modern New York City - it is not a "remake" of the original stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle about Sherlock Holmes. The series acknowledges the originals in several ways: titles that are modifications of original titles (such as "A Study in Charlotte" for "A Study in Scarlet"), mention of tangential solved cases (Sherlock gives a 1-2 minute summary of a case identical to an original Doyle short story), or use of a Doyle story element (the five orange pips.) In very few episodes the plot follows most of an original story, such as The Illustrious Client.
