Christopher McQuarrie and Tom Cruise have collaborated on 9 films together, including the previous "Mission: Impossible" film, Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation (2015). Cruise wanted McQuarrie to come back and direct a second "Mission: Impossible" film, making him the first director in the history of the series to do so. McQuarrie agreed, but only if "Rogue Nation" and "Fallout" had different visual styles. McQuarrie notes that "one of the signature elements of the series is that there has been a different director for every movie."
