Fight coordinator Roger Yuan based the fighting style of House Atreides on Filipino martial arts. To make House Harkonnen seem barbaric he based their fighting style on ancient Mongolian fighting styles. According to Yuan the Sardaukar in this adaptation are inspired by two different warrior cultures: the samurai of feudal Japan and the úlfhéðnar guard of the Norwegian king Harald Fairhair. The samurai-influence being the Sardaukar's fighting style and that they are also an elite military caste, while the úlfhéðnar-influence is the Sardaukar as a fanatical warrior cult practicing blood sacrifice and blood anointment before battle.
