President Whitmore is described as a former jet fighter pilot from the Iraq War, and he flies his own plane in the final attack on the aliens. This may have been a quiet tribute to President George Bush, who in fact was a naval aviator in the United States Navy during World War II. Bush flew multiple combat missions in the Pacific theater of the war and was once rescued by a U.S. submarine after his plane was shot down by enemy fire.
