Melville's, the restaurant above Cheers, was named for Herman Melville, one of the most famous authors from Massachusetts. The inn near Cape Cod where Sam takes his dates is called The Pequod, which was the name of the ship in Moby-Dick, Melville's most famous novel. The Pequod in turn was named after the Pequot, an indigenous tribe from what is now Connecticut.
