Many of the film's actors, including Margot Robbie and Idris Elba, were drawn to the film once James Gunn was attached to direct. John Cena accepted without even letting Gunn finish to explain what kind of project he was cast in. Pete Davidson, meanwhile, agreed as soon as he learned that he was being asked to play a sadsack D-list villain with the civilian name Dick Hertz.
