Originally Jeffrey Tambor was supposed to play Principal Koklear but his commitment to The Larry Sanders Show (1992) only gave him minimal availability to participate in the film so he asked to play the smaller role of the neighbor Art instead and was given that part. Rick Moranis asked his Spaceballs co-star Mel Brooks if he would cameo as the principal instead. Brooks was interested in hopes of supporting Moranis but was busy directing Dracula: Dead and Loving It (1995) and was forced to decline. Director Steve Miner then asked Don Knotts if he would play the part as he was a fan of Knotts' previous work and he accepted.
